acestokings asked:

I don't really have a perspective on love, because it's different for everyone and there's so many different types. It's impossible to define it as anything other than what it is; love. However I've come across various interesting perspectives. Have you ever heard the song Consider This: The True Meaning of Love by Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble of Shadows? Anna has a remarkably uncommon perspective on the subject.

Though the song is not something that I’d normally listen to, the lyricism was very interesting. I especially liked this little prose:

You say, you love me - oh, sure you do - ,

but what exactly does this affirmation mean?
I do not have the slightest notion,
no idea of what you understand by “love”
and other terms as worn-out
such as this old song and dance,
you call romance.
Quite different flowers grow indeed
in my small semantic garden … -
so, let us see, if your good vow
is more than just some chemical imbalance.
Is it worth the air you breathe,
or will it be just another waste of time with you?
What I call ‘Love, precious and true’,
would you refer to this as sin,
or crime…

What is Love?

Everyone I have asked presents me with a different flavor, a new perspective. It’s such a complex ideal, and one that so many people strive for. Is it emotion? Is it chemical reaction? Is it divine or natural? Is it instinctual or conscious?

Please, share your thoughts! I’d like to pick your brains on this matter. It’s such an interesting point of conversation.

I’m not experienced enough to know for sure, but I think it’s a kind of madness. An obsession with another person and their presence in your life.

I can understand that, I’m sure I’ve felt it before. Is it healthy at that point though? I guess it depends on what you do with it. Love is something that almost everyone is searching for; so, are we basically just looking for someone to obsess over? Are we searching for the person that is going to fulfill a particular addiction?

In my opinion, at first, it's all about hormones.. It's the way Nature made us reproduce and evolve! But, of course, that doesn't make it less real or amazing... Other kinds of love (mother-daughter, brothers, grandpas...) I don't fully understand... As you can see, I'm no romantic:b The problem of love is that each person sees it in a different way, that's what really makes it complex!

I have felt similarly it before. It seems like love would have been a very useful tool in the evolution and growth of our species. It keeps us bonded, provides a connection, and a creates a fierce loyalty that would be useful in nature and survival. If that’s the case though - especially given today’s urban living and high population - I have to ask, if for nothing but conversation: is love as a chemical reaction even necessary anymore? Is it just some lingering animalistic instinct from our ancestors based on survival and protection, or is it something that has continued to evolve with us into something more?

Is love real or imaginary? Is it a promise or just wishful thinking?

Lend me your thoughts, I’d love to know.
